I find he reads like Dickens - why use two words, when twenty would do? And these stories felt very much like he had to hit a word count; repetition or unnecessary detail seem to be the norm. It's stories so some will be better than others. I would describe them as imaginative, thrilling, moving, thought provoking, prescient, nostalgic and extremely well written; I love the way he uses language. I will never 'finish' this collection or Volume 2; I have been reading and re-reading these stories for forty years and see no reason to stop now. Sep 30, Salimbol rated it really liked it Shelves: science-fiction , fantasy , horror.

A rather amazing collection of stories from Bradbury, showcasing his imagination, his ability to shift tone and topics, and his fantastic use of language. As a side note: I think I deserve a medal for accomplishing the Herculean task of getting through this nearly page tome ;-.

But good if you want short sharp reads. Feb 02, TheYetiWakes rated it really liked it Shelves: science-fiction , short-stories. Great collection of stories. This and Volume 2 highly recommended for such a breadth and fun collection to keep near by and dip into whenever. Like any collection of short stories there will be good and bad. Fortunatly there was more good than bad in these two volumes.

Aug 04, Sho rated it liked it Shelves: sci-fi , short-stories. About time I checked him out. Not as good as I thought it would be. Aug 28, Jon Mountjoy rated it really liked it. A lot of fabulous stories in here. Several that werne't to my liking, but that's not unexpected. Devastatingly good writing from old Ray. I always wondered where they got their cigarettes from when marooned on a desolate, dying planet, light years from earth.

Love Ray Bradbury. Love, love, LOVE. Feb 18, K. While some of the stories in this collection are definitely five star stories - the famous 'Sound of Thunder' for example - but some are definitely not. Inevitably in a collection of so many stories some are not perfect, didn't suit my taste or were downright odd. The stories I liked best were 'Sound of Thunder' where future is changed by a time traveller standing on a butterfly, 'The Foghorn' where a lonely dinosaur mistakes the foghorn for its mate and 'The Veldt' where the virtual reality nur While some of the stories in this collection are definitely five star stories - the famous 'Sound of Thunder' for example - but some are definitely not.

The stories I liked best were 'Sound of Thunder' where future is changed by a time traveller standing on a butterfly, 'The Foghorn' where a lonely dinosaur mistakes the foghorn for its mate and 'The Veldt' where the virtual reality nursery is manipulated by some very savvy children. It was worth reading this collection for these alone. In fact, most of these stories were okay but I did get a bit bogged down in the middle. I loved it! Hundreds of short stories.

I did not realize how long volume one was when I started it and it took me several months reading on and off to complete.

It had some repeats from the illustrated man. I liked it because the stories encompassed so many themes and plots and I liked the element of surprise because I never knew what subject matter was coming next. RB is a unique master of the short story.

  7. Going to take a break from his works for now but will revisit more in the future. It's hard to review or sum my thoughts on a 'volume' of his short stories. Some are a great like the murderer or the electric grandmother but others aren't as good. I'm left with the impression that the strength of Ray Bradbury's short stories are more in the ideas and premises than the writing itself as characters are barely given more than a few strokes.

But those ideas are great. I didn't read the whole thing, but most of the short stories were worth reading. Bradbury's style is fairly simple, but every now and then he'll throw in a beautiful sentence. He's obsessed with the futuristic planet Mars, and it's fun to join him on his eerie journies there. As a bonus, he also narrates the audio version. In some cases, an author reading his own work can seriously be all kinds of tragic, but with Rob Dircks , he knows exactly the timing and snark to add to enhance the stories.

I found every one of the stories in this "bag of gems" to be imaginative, entertaining, and well worth my time. My favorites were "End Game", with its apocalyptically popular video game and Purgatory, which was just a little familiar, but with some nerdy twists. It looks like you have a new fan in the millenial crowd, Rob! I have yet to read anything written by Rob Dircks that wasn't wildly enjoyable and didn't take itself too seriously.

I certainly hope more volumes of these cool little stories are on their way soon, because I can't wait to geek out on every single one of them. Hi, Rob Dircks here. Apr 07, Bandit rated it really liked it.

And so it was. Most of them curated, which I like, because it offers explanations for inspirations. Quality wise these stories feature uniformly decent writing, but then again the contents not the packaging seem to be the star of the show here.
